Do animals have a soul?

I remember my grandfather telling me a story of how he got into trouble at school as a boy, for being adamant about animals having a soul.

One day in class the teacher was telling his students that animals do not have a soul.

My grandfather answered "yes they do" to which the teacher replied;
“No boy, in order for one to have a soul one must show; understanding, intellect, and free will. Now you tell me how an animal has those qualities"

My grandfather began;
"Well sir,
When I call my dog, "hey Trixie" he comes, showing understanding.

When I tell him to sit he does as I command, showing intellect.

But when Trixie and I are out for a walk, and he sees a cat, no matter how many times I shout TRIXIE! Sit! He chases the cat anyway, showing free will"

With that the teacher gave my grandfather a slap around the head! Knowing he'd just been out smarted by a young child.

You see animals do have a soul. When we look into their eyes we are not simply witnessing ourselves mirrored back at us, we are seeing the divine reflection of the universe, which is within all of us. Animals can be our biggest teachers, our closest companions and those we share our inner most thoughts with.

They trust us with their protection and have purposes’ of their own, that they experience, often with our loving help. We must learn to communicate, honour and respect our friends of another species.
Through doing this we experience and whole new level of love, mutual understanding and respect.

I couldn't agree more./ When I had my beautiful Zak and when he would look at me in his old age with his huge soulful eyes so full of love I just knew that when he finally departed this world his spirit would be welcomed into the human stream of evolution.
