True Meaning of “Here and Now”
Most of us though keep talking that true spiritual path is to be “Here and Now”; we all suggest to others that we should neither remain stuck to our past, nor we should float in future. We should always be in the present. Though this is absolutely right, but, a very few people understand the true essence of this verbal jargon. Before I deliberate further, I would like to share one excerpt from one of my books titled “A Date with God”. Here goes the excerpt:
“
“Good morning Sir,”
“Hey Jennifer, very good morning. How are you?” Raj asked.
“Fine, thank you, Sir.”
“Jenifer, I want to share something very important with you. Can you spare some time with me?”
“Why not, Sir? It’s rather my pleasure.”
“Not here. Would you mind going with me on a long ride?”
“Not at all, Sir.” She replied with smile.
He took her to the car and asked her to sit inside. He drove towards the outskirts of the city. As he drove hardly for 15 to 20 minutes, he found the traffic jam ahead. There was a huge gathering at the crossing. A man, who appeared like a lunatic fellow, was abusing the crowd, and people had simply thrashed him down. Raj came out of the car and went inside the crowd to inquire about the fuss. He protected the bearded man, asked the crowd why they were beating him. They replied that he was abusing everyone without any reason. When Raj asked him why he was abusing everybody, the man started laughing.
He said,” I am not abusing anyone. I am just muttering some words. It’s you who are drawing that abusing meaning from the words. The word in itself does not have any meaning. You associate a feeling, certain interpretations with a word. If the meaning, which you associate with a word, is offending, what can I do? You try to confine this vast life into few words, how can one reach the Ultimate Truth, which lies beyond all interpretations, beyond all expression?” the man asked.
Everybody was stunned with the philosophic question of the so-appeared lunatic man. Raj felt like to have been thrown into an unknown space. He set the man free and asked the crowd to disperse. He narrated the whole incident to Jennifer, but she could hardly understand anything.”
Now think who is more prudent? The apparent lunatic fellow, or we, the part of a big crowd? Basically, unconscious people, though it appears that they remain either in past or in future; but, the fact is that they remain neither in past, nor in future. In fact, they don’t even exist in true sense. Unconsciousness petrifies them into matter. Of course, some movements and actions are there in them; that’s why they seem to be living. But, the fact is that unconsciousness makes them just a biological material system. They are not ‘being’, a conscious entity. Somewhere, Anne Besant has beautifully explained the word consciousness:
“ ‘Consciousness turned inward’ by the name of life and ‘life turned outward’ by the name of consciousness”
In fact, it is the consciousness which makes us living; and unconsciousness makes you a matter. I am not talking about biological meaning of life. The only difference between God and the world is – God is the apex of consciousness and matter is totally unconsciousness. Though, some scientists say matter too has some degree of consciousness as concluded by the experiment of Bell Theorem and others; but, it is in fact a totally deterministic consciousness. A totally deterministic consciousness is nothing better than unconsciousness. We being the biological system are in fact deterministic consciousness to a larger extent; and we are on the path of evolution to the un-deterministic consciousness. When we fully evolve to the state of Super-consciousness, we ourselves become God. Because in the state of super-consciousness, though we appear to be in the body –mind system from outside; but, in fact, we are dissolved and merged with the entire existence from inside. We are no more confined to our body-mind system. This evolution to the highest possible state of super-consciousness is the ultimate destination of the mankind.
When spiritual teachers ask us to be in the state of “Here and Now”, this is just the opposite approach. Unless and until we are in the state of consciousness, we can never be in the state of “Here and Now”. Being in the state of “Here and Now” without consciousness is not possible; otherwise, it will lead us to the delirium, which again makes us non-existent. So, the right approach is firstly to endeavor to learn as how to be in the state of consciousness. Once, we are in the state of consciousness, we will be in the state of “Here and Now” without doing any effort.
Now, how will you test that whether you are in the state of “Here and Now”, or not? Just imagine – if a person starts abusing you, how will you react? Most probably you will retort. If you are bound to retort, it means, you have drawn the meaning of those abusing words from your past memory stored in your sub-consciousness. It means that you have been dumped into the dark valley of past. If you are really in the state of “Here and Now” and a person abuses you, the euphoria of your consciousness will not let those abusing words touch your inner core and you will remain unaffected. So, just have a true test of yourself and judge- where you stand in the path of consciousness. Whether, you exist in the state of “Here and Now”, or you don’t exist at all?
Even this word “Here” is not right. When you exist in consciousness, you are not confined to a geographical location; rather, you pervade the entire cosmos. That’s why, I have coined the word “Now and everywhere simultaneously”.
Thank You.
